The new Windows Search engine in Windows 7 and Windows Vista is based on the MSSearch indexing and search engine developed previously for SQL Server, SharePoint Portal Server, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, and other Microsoft products. The new Windows Search engine replaces the Indexing Service (Cisvc . exe) used in earlier Windows platforms, including Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

Windows Live Mail is a combined email, calendar, and contacts program that replaces three products that were available previously with Windows Vista Windows Mail, Windows Calendar, and Windows Contacts. If you haven't purchased Microsoft Office Outlook, you can use Windows Live Mail to send and receive email. For connecting to email servers and receiving email, Windows Live Mail supports Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) and Internet Message Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4). Microsoft ShareRoint Portal Server 2001 and later versions built on the gathering and content indexing features from SQL Server 2000 and Exchange 2000 Server to provide aggregated gathering for portal and non-portal content. Eventually, this code base was retuned for the client desktop by the MSN team that produced WDS. WDS 3.0 was then integrated into Windows Vista as a system service and platform for use by applications (including the 2007 Microsoft Office system). Now WDS 4.0 is included as part of Windows Vista SR2 and Windows Server 2008 SR2 and is integrated into Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. In addition to these basic file properties, many data file formats can store custom metadata. These additional properties can be added by a device, by software, or directly by the user. When you take a digital picture, your camera might add the camera make and model, exposure time, ISO speed, and other details to the file when it's saved. When you rip a CD using Windows Media Player, it retrieves details about the artist and album from the Windows Metadata Internet Service and adds them to the MP3 or WMA files. Microsoft Office Word 2007 automatically adds your name to the Author field in a document you create you can fill in additional properties such as keywords and comments and save them with the file.
The main reason enterprises might need to enable the previous Indexing Service would be for application compatibility reasons . For example, if enterprises develop applications that depend on Cisvc . exe, they can enable this service to support those applications. The Microsoft Office Visio shape-finding process also uses Cisvc . exe to index shapes . Therefore, if you need to search for shapes quickly in Office or Office Visio on some computers, you can enable Cisvc. exe on those computers .
WARNING Do not repackage Microsoft Office. The Office package files include logic that customizes the installation for the destination computer and user. Repackaging the package file loses this logic, potentially preventing the package from installing correctly in some configurations.
If you do adopt a Windows Mobile smartphone, you'll find that it's easy to integrate with Windows 7, as well as some other Microsoft software, including Microsoft Office. Paint is designed to create and edit bitmap (.bmp) files, but you can also open and save pictures created in or for other graphics programs and the Internet using several common file formats, such as .tiff, .gif, or .jpeg. A bitmap file is a map of a picture created from small black, white, or colored dots, or bits. When you start Paint, a blank canvas appears in the work area, along with a Ribbon (New ) , similar to Microsoft Office 2007, at the top. The Ribbon with two tabs Home and View allows you to quickly select document related commands. Paint comes with a set of tools on the Ribbon that you can use for drawing and manipulating pictures. A document is a file you create using a word processing program, such as a letter, memo, or resume. When you start WordPad, a blank document appears in the work area, known as the document window, along with a Ribbon (New ) , similar to Microsoft Office 2007, at the top. The Ribbon with two tabs Home and View allows you to quickly select document related commands. You can enter information to create a new document and save the result in a file, or you can open an existing file and save the document with changes. As you type, text moves, or wraps, to a new line when the previous one is full.
As technology increased in complexity, so did opportunities for virus writers. Virus construction kits provided simpler power tools for evildoers, as did Microsoft Office with its macro technology. David L. Smith wrote the Melissa macro virus, which duped users into opening a malicious Microsoft Word email attachment. When opened, the macro used Microsoft Outlook to send copies of itself to 50 people in the address book. It was an effective method of propagation that in 1999 clogged email systems around the world. Melissa and subsequent variants of email macro viruses showed that one did not have to be a formidable programmer to elicit formidable mayhem. Melissa used a combination of human and technological manipulation to accomplish its mission, but other forms of viruses spread even more effectively.
You can even take this process a step further by having your computer download and install updates for related Microsoft products, including Microsoft Office, via an extension component called Microsoft Update. In the mid-1990s, Paul attended a Microsoft presentation in which a crowded auditorium was stepped through the company's business software of the day. The talk began on a high note, with a discussion of the then-current version of Microsoft Office, which was already killing off competition from Lotus, WordPerfect, and others. Microsoft Outlook is an extremely powerful tool, enabling you to create and manage appointments, meetings, and other events, as well as tasks and other time-based schedules. For all its strengths, however, Microsoft Outlook isn't perfect. First, you must pay a hefty sum for Microsoft Outlook unless you get a version along with other Microsoft Office applications when you purchase a new PC. Second, Outlook is designed to work primarily with Microsoft Exchange-based servers. Although it's possible to use Outlook as an individual, it's not ideal, and even the latest Outlook versions offer only very simple methods for sharing calendaring information with other people.

Over the past decade, Microsoft has found that translating its success in operating systems into other markets isn't always a sure thing. Yes, its Microsoft Office productivity suite is a blockbuster success, and its enterprise-oriented Windows Server products aren't too shabby either, but these products are all obviously related. As shown in Figure 7-6, Windows Update remains a client application that you can access from the Start menu. From here, you can check for and install new updates, hide updates you don't want to be alerted about anymore, and view the history of updates you've already installed. If you frequently need access to a folder to either open or save files in it, you can add it to the Favorites group that appears at the top of the Windows Explorer Navigation pane . When you want to write a letter, fire off a quick memo, create a fancy report, or publish a newsletter, you use a type of software program called a word processor. For most computer users, Microsoft Word is the word processing program of choice. Word is a full-featured word processor, and it's included on many new PCs and as part of the Microsoft Office suite and some versions of Microsoft Works. You can use Word for all your writing needs from basic letters to fancy newsletters and everything in between. You start Word from the Windows Start menu, by selecting Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office Word 2007. When Word launches, a blank document appears in the Word workspace. Word can display your document in one of five views Print Layout, Full Screen Reading, Web Layout, Outline, and Draft. You select a view by using the View buttons at the bottom left of the Word window or by making a selection from the View ribbon.
Hardware Events, Windows Internet Explorer, and other Windows components and application events are accessible under the Applications And Services Logs node . Applications And Services Logs are a new category of event logs that store events from a single application or component rather than events that might have system-wide impact . Normally, available application or service logs will be listed in a hierarchy under the manufacturer and product name .
